About Surfing Monkey Shave Ice
In 1997, Paul Davies, owner of Surfing Monkey Shave Ice, packed up his life in London and headed to Hawaii to spread roots.
On that first trip to Honolulu, Paul was taken to the North Shore of Oahu to try the world famous Matsumoto’s Shave Ice, and he could not believe how soft the ice was and how good it tasted.
Opening In Kihei
One day a small shack on South Kihei Rd became available, however his funds had depleted. Knowing his situation, two of Paul’s very dear friends stepped up to help him out, allowing him to open the first ever Surfing Monkey Shave Ice in 2008.
Over the years, Surfing Monkey expanded products with island partnerships including Roselani’s Ice Cream, Maui Brewing Company Root Beer and Dole Whip.
The Kihei location near Foodland is the flagship store. Kihei Kalama Village opened in early 2023.
Today, the two Kihei locations are managed by Paul’s daughter, India Davies continuing the family tradition.

Surfing Monkey’s mission to sell the softest and most flavorful shave ice, with only locally sourced raw sugar syrup. We are proud to be a small, local family-run business, serving only authentic Hawaiian Shave Ice.
